Region Description:

This page gives you live AIS vessel tracking from the Kiel Canal
(German: Nord-Ostsee-Kanal), until 1948 known as the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Kanal, is a 61 miles (98 kilometres) long canal in the German Bundesland Schleswig-Holstein that links the North Sea at Brunsbüttel to the Baltic Sea at Kiel-Holtenau.
An average of 280 nautical miles (519 kilometers) is saved by using the Kiel Canal instead of going around the Jutland Peninsula. This not only saves time but also avoids potentially dangerous storm-prone seas. According to the canal's website, it is the most heavily used artificial seaway in the world; over 43,000 ships passed through in 2007, excluding small craft

What is Fleetmon? Fleetmon is the piece of software that displays the ship positions in Digital-Seas.com. Some people say it is "the best tracker in the vessel universe...". We say it is your interactive tool for real-time vessel tracking, fleet monitoring, logistics scheduling, research and marine traffic analysis. Fleetmon is also available as a separate desktop software product with advanced functionality, and of course there is Fleetmon mobile, the outstanding vessel-tracking App for the Apple iPhone.

What is AIS? AIS is short for Automatic Identification System. It is a system for identifying and locating ships by exchanging data using standard radio frequency transceivers. The International Maritime Organization (IMO), an agency of the United Nations (UN) requires ships to send AIS signals for a better security at sea. Digital-Seas.com makes use of AIS signals and other position data sources to locate ships and gather information about them. For more information, see our page on AIS technology or the Wikipedia.
